Wema Bank, one of Nigeria’s oldest banks, marked its 78th anniversary on May 2, 2023. The bank expressed its next objective of attaining tier-1 bank status, a feat that would elevate it to the top tier of the Nigerian banking industry.
As part of the celebration, the bank also marked the 6th anniversary of its digital banking application, Alat, which allows customers to carry out banking activities with ease.
Speaking at the anniversary event in Lagos, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, Mr. Moruf Oseni, expressed the bank’s pride in achieving the milestone, particularly as many of its peers have disappeared from the industry over the years. He acknowledged the great feat of the institution and the prospect of greater achievements in the years ahead.
Mr. Oseni also highlighted the bank’s groundbreaking product, Alat, which has earned international recognition as a world-class product. He noted that the product has helped to bring the bank back to the heart of banking in Nigeria, as it continues to set the pace for digital banking in the country.
Regarding the future of Wema Bank, the Managing Director/CEO said, “Our best is yet to come. We set N30 billion and it is a fantastic number. But honestly, we did N30 billion this year, first N30 billion this year and we will do much more next year. This bank is a confluence of two great banks, Wema and National, and at the time, those two banks were in the top five banks in Nigeria. The aim is to take this bank to that height. This bank must go back to tier one.”
Finally, Mr. Oseni expressed his appreciation to the past and present executives and staff of the bank, as well as customers of the bank for their unrelenting support towards seeing the institution thrive.
