The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a decline in the Issuance of National Identity Numbers (NIN) by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for the year 2022. According to the NBS, a total of 22.49 million NIN were registered and Issued during the year, marking a decrease of 16.85% when compared to the 27.05 million NIN Issued in the previous year, 2021. These findings were detailed in the NBS’s National Identity Registration Statistics 2022 report.
The report also highlighted the States that recorded the highest and lowest numbers of NIN Registrations and Issuances. Kano State led the pack with 2.44 million Registrations, followed closely by Lagos with 2.09 million. On the other end of the Spectrum, the States with the least Registrations and Issuances included Bayelsa (100,525), Ekiti (141,534), Ebonyi (165,375), Cross-River (268,904), and Kogi (308,681).
In addition, the NBS disclosed that there were 255,726 NIN Registrations and Issuances in the diaspora, with 140,496 Males and 115,230 Females included in this figure.
The Data used for this Analysis were sourced from NIMC and covered the Registered NINs and Issuances for the year 2022. The North-West Zone had the highest number of Registrations and NIN Issuances, totaling 7,207,695, whereas the South-East recorded the lowest with 1,793,373.
The report also touched upon the efforts made by the Federal Government to Increase NIN enrollment. In 2020, the Government secured a World Bank credit facility of $430 million for NIMC as part of the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (DI4D) Initiative. This Initiative aims to raise the enrollment of Individuals for NIN from 36.89 million in 2019 to a target of 148 million by June 1, 2024. Last month, Shubham Chaudhuri, the World Bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, expressed confidence that Nigeria can achieve this enrollment target within the next two years.
