The Federal Authorities have Mandated the Management of Federal Tertiary Hospitals to activate the Enforcement of the “no work, no pay” principle as a response to the ongoing strike led by Resident Doctors.
According to this Policy, Resident Doctors participating in the Strike will not receive their regular Salaries for the Duration of their Strike action.
This Directive was communicated through a Circular dated August 1, 2023, titled “Implementation of the Federal Government’s ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy Regarding Ongoing Strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors,” which was Observed by a Correspondent from Kukurukunews.
Dr. Andrew Noah, the Director of Hospital Services, signed the letter, expressing the Government’s disappointment that the Doctors Initiated the Strike despite the efforts of Conciliatory Meetings involving various Stakeholders, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the National Assembly. Unfortunately, these attempts failed to reach a Consensus.
The Hospitals have been directed to Implement the ‘no work, no pay’ Policy and also maintain an attendance register for Resident Doctors who are willing to continue their Duties despite the ongoing Strike.
The letter stated, “I have been authorized to apprise you that the Federal Ministry of Health has Formally adopted the ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy as per circular Ref. No.58598/8.1/II/182 dated June 22, 2016.” Furthermore, it Conveyed, “I have additionally been Instructed to request you to uphold an attendance register for all Resident Doctors willing to Work and to provide the Ministry with a monthly list of such Individuals.”
