Malam Bashir Ahmad, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital Communication, has challenged Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to take his old naira notes to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) if they are legal tender. Ahmad’s statement comes in response to Ganduje, who criticized the naira redesign policy, calling it a move to undermine democracy and sabotage the upcoming general elections.
Ahmad stated that individuals who are opposed to the policy are only trying to protect their interests. He went on to suggest that these individuals had amassed large sums of money and were hesitant to bring them to the CBN because of the scrutiny of the EFCC and NFIU. Ahmad also jokingly responded to Ganduje’s allegations, telling him that if he took his old naira notes to the CBN and they were deemed legitimate by the EFCC and NFIU, he would receive a notification.
Bashir Ahmad further commented on Ganduje’s claims that Buhari had disrupted democracy. He claimed he did not believe the democracy had been compromised until he participated in the primaries in Kano, where he alleges they rigged the election based on the fact that he was a politician from Abuja.
