The immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, made a strong statement before the red chamber on Monday afternoon, asserting that President Bola Tinubu would not regret nominating him to serve as a minister in his cabinet. Wike’s appearance before the Senate was part of the screening process for ministerial nominees.
Of particular note was the fact that Wike, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), found himself on the ministerial list of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. The President had submitted the list to the Senate the previous Thursday.
During the screening, Wike proudly recounted his achievements as the Governor of the oil-rich Niger Delta state from May 2015 to May 2023. He highlighted the many projects he initiated and completed to enhance the state’s infrastructure. Moreover, he stressed that he had extended invitations to politicians from all parties to commission these projects, emphasizing his commitment to governance beyond partisan lines.
Wike conveyed to the Senators that achieving such results demanded dedication and passion for the job. He contrasted those who simply sought ministerial positions for their own ego with those who genuinely wanted to make a difference and serve the Nigerian people.
Expressing gratitude to Mr. President for nominating him, Wike assured that given the President’s hunger to address the nation’s challenges, he would provide the required support. He expressed confidence that if confirmed as a minister, he would not disappoint the President, pledging to deliver to the best of his abilities.
As a testament to Wike’s competence and capacity to deliver in office, Senate President Godswill Akpabio spoke highly of him and invited him to take a bow after his introductory remarks, signifying an acknowledgment of his credibility.
It remains to be seen how the Senate will proceed with Wike’s nomination, but his appearance and statement have certainly added a significant dimension to the ongoing ministerial screening process.
