Senior US officials, including Amos Hochstein and Brett McGurk, are set to meet with their Israeli counterparts to discuss a potential deal to end the conflict in Lebanon and secure Israel’s northern border against Hezbollah attacks ¹ ². This meeting comes less than a week before the US presidential election.
Ceasefire Proposal
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed optimism about a ceasefire, stating it could happen in “the coming hours or days”. Hezbollah’s new leader, Naim Qassem, also indicated openness to a negotiated truce under certain conditions. The proposed plan would see Hezbollah forces retreat 20 miles from the border, north of the Litani River, with Israeli forces withdrawing from Lebanon. The Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers would then take charge of the border.

Gaza Conflict
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are underway to agree on a short pause in fighting in Gaza. However, Hamas rejected the idea of a short-term pause, instead seeking a permanent end to the war. The conflict in Lebanon has claimed over 1,754 lives since September 23, with Israel reporting 37 soldiers lost since ground operations began on September 30.
Hezbollah’s Stance
Hezbollah’s new leader, Naim Qassem, stated the group could continue resisting Israeli air and ground attacks for months. However, Qassem expressed openness to a negotiated truce if presented with an Israeli offer.
