In a significant development, the Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives lost five members to the ruling All Progressives Congress on Thursday.
The lawmakers who defected from the Labour Party to the APC are:
- Tochukwu Okere (Imo)
- Donatus Mathew (Kaduna)
- Bassey Akiba (Cross River)
- Iyawe Esosa (Edo)
- Daulyop Fom (Plateau)
Confirming the development, Donatus Mathew, who represents Kaura Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, stated that his decision to defect to the APC was based on conviction.
When asked if his constituents supported his defection, Mathew explained, “You cannot just work on the decision of the people at the constituency level because you are dealing with people with different levels of understanding. I am taking this decision based on conviction.”
The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, read their letter of defection to the APC on the Green Chamber floor on Thursday.
