The British High Commission in Nigeria has announced that it is offering Chevening Scholarships for the 2024/2025 Academic year to Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria.
This Initiative aims to promote Fairness and equal access to Education for all in alignment with International Conventions.
The Deputy Commissioner of the British High Commission in Nigeria, Gill Atkinson, made this announcement during a Presentation in Abuja.
She emphasized that Chevening Scholarships are designed to be Inclusive and not discriminate against any particular group.
The goal is to provide Opportunities for Individuals to pursue their passions and bring their Skills and experiences back to Nigeria.
Atkinson stated that the UK Government is committed to supporting Nigeria’s brightest Talents and equipping young Nigerians to Contribute to the Development of their country.
By including persons with Disabilities in the Chevening program, the UK Government acknowledges their abilities and aims to promote their positive Impact on Society.
Oluwafunmilayo Ladepo, Chevening Programme Officer in Nigeria, highlighted that the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities is not solely based on their Disabilities but on their Abilities, which are often overlooked.
She shared a success Story of a visually Impaired Journalist who completed his Master’s Program through Chevening and secured an Internship with the BBC, Demonstrating the Program’s commitment to empowering individuals to contribute to their Fields.
Since 2014, when the UK Government started including Persons with Disabilities as beneficiaries, approximately forty-seven Individuals with Disabilities have benefited from the Chevening program in Nigeria.
Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, James Lalu, expressed Gratitude to the UK Government for Including persons with Disabilities in the Program and highlighted the Importance of this Opportunity for PWDs.
The Chevening Scholarship program is open to Applicants in Nigeria, and Interested Individuals are encouraged to apply to UK Institutions listed on the Chevening Website and meet the Application deadline for the 2024 Session.
