A Tanzanian Professor, Mohamed Janabi, has assumed office as the World Health Organisation Regional Director for Africa.

Janabi assumed office as WHO Regional Director for Africa on Monday, June 30, 2025, bringing to the role over three decades of distinguished leadership in clinical medicine, health policy, public health, and health systems development across the continent, and beyond.

He was elected the WHO Regional Director for Africa in May 2025, during a Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, held in Geneva.

His election followed the appointment of Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu as the Executive Director of the World Health Organisation Health Emergencies Programme, who was acting as the WHO RD for Africa.

On his X handle, Janabi posted, “Today, I officially assumed office as @WHOAFRO Regional Director. It is a profound honour and responsibility to lead this critical work at a time when the health of our continent is more important than ever.

My focus is clear: to build stronger, more resilient health systems, promote fairness in access to care, and foster collaboration across Africa and beyond.

It was especially meaningful to be welcomed by my brother and colleague, Dr. @Chikwe_I, who has guided the region with strength during the transition.”

Janabi is a prominent cardiologist, health strategist, and global health diplomat, and has dedicated his career to strengthening health systems, advancing equitable care, and championing innovation and collaboration to improve health in Africa.

His vision is for a healthier, resilient, and prosperous Africa, in which everyone has access to quality health care through equitable, innovative, and sustainable systems.

“His priorities include advancing universal health coverage; reducing maternal and child mortality; tackling communicable and noncommunicable diseases; promoting climate-resilient health systems; and strengthening health security and emergency preparedness.

“He is also a strong proponent of domestic health financing, local research and innovation, and regional and global partnerships to address Africa’s shared health challenges.

“Prior to his appointment, Dr Janabi served as Senior Health Advisor to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, and Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, the country’s largest referral facility.

“He previously led the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute, which he founded and transformed into a leading regional centre of excellence in cardiovascular care,” his biography on WHO’s website stated.
