The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have begun an indefinite nationwide strike to demand the release of their four months’ withheld salaries. This decision was announced in a statement co-signed by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi on Sunday.
The strike, which started on Monday, October 28, 2024, is a response to the government’s failure to meet the unions’ demands despite several ultimatums. The unions had given the Federal Government a three-week ultimatum on September 17, 2023, to pay the outstanding withheld salaries or risk industrial action.
SSANU and NASU have accused the Federal Government of unfair treatment and discrimination, citing the payment of withheld salaries to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) while neglecting non-academic unions. The unions claim that despite their eight-month strike in 2022, the government has not fully paid their salaries.

Key Demands:
- Payment of four months’ withheld salaries
- Improved remuneration
- Earned allowances
- Implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government
The strike will affect all public universities and inter-university centers across the country, with members directed to hold a joint congress on their respective campuses before proceeding with the strike action.
