The South East Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party has called on the PDP National Working Committee and other stakeholders to retain and support its nominee for the position of National Secretary.

On Tuesday in Abuja, Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, speaking on behalf of the South East, made the statement while presenting the region’s resolution unanimously nominating former National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, for the position of PDP National Secretary.

The PDP has been grappling with internal conflict since the 2023 elections, which intensified in December 2024 when the South East Zonal Caucus and a lower court recognized former National Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary.

While PDP governors, the Board of Trustees, and the National Working Committee accepted the decision, Senator Samuel Anyanwu contested it at the Supreme Court.

However, on March 21, the court rejected his challenge, ruling that internal party affairs are beyond judicial interference.

Following this, on April 14, PDP governors asked the South East to nominate a new secretary and endorsed Koshoedo, a decision the NWC ratified during its 600th meeting on April 29.

Despite these actions, the disagreement over the position remains unresolved, causing divisions within the party leadership.

To resolve the crisis, current and former governors appointed former Senate President Bukola Saraki to head a seven-member committee to mediate before the May 27 NEC meeting and the party’s elective convention in August.

Acting on the recommendations of the Governors Forum and NWC, the South East Zonal Caucus, in a meeting held on May 14, unanimously reaffirmed Udeh-Okoye as its nominee for National Secretary.

The Senate Minority Whip said, “Our prayer and appeal is that this party should carefully look into our request in line with what has been done in the past. Precedents have been set, so we are asking you to look at the zone.

The request of this zone should not be jettisoned. We are not here to give orders, but to make an appeal so that the decision that will be taken will be for the growth of the Party.”
