The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to revoke existing airstrip licenses issued to private individuals and organizations, citing national security concerns. They also seek an immediate halt to issuing new licenses for private airstrip operations.
This decision follows a motion sponsored by Abubakar Gumi, representing Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State. Gumi highlighted the recent approval of an airstrip for Living Faith Church, situated on Canaanland in Ota, Ogun State, confirmed by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

Gumi expressed concerns about security challenges stemming from illegal importation of firearms, ammunition, and illicit drugs. He argued that granting airstrips to private entities could exacerbate these issues, fueling insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry.
The motion was put to a voice vote, with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas ruling in favor of the “Ayes.” As a result, the House has urged the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to:
- Stop issuing new airstrip licenses to private individuals and organizations
- Withdraw existing approvals granted to private individuals and organizations to safeguard national security .
