Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, is urging youths, especially graduates, to acquire vocational skills for self-reliance instead of relying solely on government employment. He emphasized that government employment for everyone is no longer realistic in Nigeria, hence the need for vocational skills acquisition.
At a three-day skill acquisition program in Akure, Adegbonmire stated, “We need to equip youths with skills to become self-employed, as expecting government employment is unrealistic.” He believes vocational skills will empower individuals to work independently, significantly reducing Nigeria’s unemployment rate.
The program, sponsored by the senator and National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services, trained 170 youths. Adegbonmire plans to continue this initiative, emphasizing that education should equip individuals with practical skills for self-reliance.
Program Details:

- Duration: Three days (Monday to Wednesday)
- Participants: 170 youths (100 fresh graduates and 70 women)
- Training Areas:
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for fresh graduates
- Agriculture (palm oil processing) for women
- Benefits: Tools for work upon completion, bolstering trades and economic independence
By acquiring vocational skills, Nigerian youths can become self-sufficient and contribute to the country’s prosperity. This initiative aligns with efforts to promote youth empowerment and self-reliance in Ondo State.
