The Ondo State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has made a pressing appeal to the state government to enhance the welfare of its members and curb the exodus of healthcare professionals from the state. The association is advocating for the implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure across all healthcare sectors to address the brain drain that has plagued the sector.
According to Olumuyiwa Alonge, the state Chairman of NMA, the poor condition of service is driving experienced healthcare professionals to seek opportunities abroad. He emphasized that fair remuneration is crucial, as it not only reflects salary figures but also acknowledges the value, motivates excellence, and safeguards against burnout.

Key Demands by the NMA:
- Uniform Implementation of Consolidated Medical Salary Structure: Across all healthcare levels to ensure fairness and equity.
- Prompt Payment of Outstanding Arrears: Related to salary upgrades, including the new minimum wage.
- Improved Working Conditions: To retain talents in the profession.
Alonge stressed that the mass exodus of healthcare professionals, known as brain drain, is a consequence of a system that fails to offer compensation and career fulfillment. He urged the government to address these issues to strengthen the commitment and dedication of healthcare workers to patient care.
The NMA’s appeal comes amid the 2024 Physicians Week celebration, themed “Ensuring Universal Applicability in Remuneration: A Panacea to Talent Retention in the Healthcare System.” The event highlights the need for fair remuneration and improved working conditions to retain healthcare professionals in the state .
