The Interior Ministry of Niger has Announced restrictions on the Activities of United Nations Agencies, Non-governmental organizations, and International organizations within Military “operation zones.”
This decision comes after President Mohamed Bazoum was unseated in a Military Coup on July 26, led by the Former Commander of Niger’s Presidential guard, Abdourahamane Tchiani.
While the affected Regions were not specified, a Statement from the Ministry, Broadcast on National radio, cited the “Current Security situation and Operational Commitment of the Nigerien Armed Forces” as the reasons for Temporarily Suspending all activities and Movements in these Operational Zones.
The ECOWAS bloc has expressed concern over the Coup and ordered the Activation of an ECOWAS standby Force to restore Constitutional order in Niger.
World leaders have also condemned the Coup attempt against President Bazoum by Members of the Presidential Guard.
In a separate Statement, the Junta announced the resumption of Domestic Flights and the restoration of some State Institutions, including the Constitutional Court.
However, land and air Borders remain closed, causing Delays and long queues at Border Crossings, such as the one at Gabon’s Border with Southern Cameroon.
