Nigeria was plunged into darkness on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, after electricity workers under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) went on an indefinite strike.

The strike action followed the assault on NUEE President Joe Ajaero in Imo State on November 1, 2023, and the unions’ demand for the government to address other issues in the power sector.

NUEE spokesperson Ndidi Mbah confirmed to Kukuruku that the union members withdrew their services from the national grid around 11:20 am on Monday, leading to the nationwide blackout.

The strike action affected all parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.

The Nigerian government expressed displeasure with the strike action, calling it a flagrant disobedience to court order and a lack of respect for the judiciary.

The government also expressed concern about the impact of the strike on the nation’s economy and social activities.
