The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a significant step towards reinforcing accountability in the building profession by inaugurating the Builder’s Disciplinary Tribunal. Presided over by Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, the ceremony held in Abuja emphasized the importance of professional ethics in construction.
Tribunal’s Objectives:
- Ensure Compliance with Professional Standards: Hold builders accountable for failing to comply with set standards.
- Uphold Public Safety: Act as a guardian of public safety, ensuring negligence and misconduct are not tolerated.
- Enforce Ethical Conduct: Strict adherence to the “Code of Ethics and Professional Practice” among registered builders.
The tribunal’s formation is a response to recent building collapses, including a tragic incident in Lugbe, Abuja, which claimed five lives. Minister Dangiwa noted that this is not an isolated case, but part of a recurring pattern demanding attention and decisive action.
Challenges and Future Directions:
Chairman Dr. Samson Opaluwah highlighted the significant challenge of unlicensed builders practicing without licenses. He emphasized the need for expanded regulations to encompass all construction sector practitioners.
The Permanent Secretary, represented by Mr. Olatunde Ajayi, welcomed the tribunal as a vital step in enhancing regulatory frameworks. Minister Dangiwa urged tribunal members to act with diligence and professionalism, recognizing the far-reaching effects of their decisions.
