Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, announced that beginning January 2025, commercial bus and taxi drivers in Abuja will require security clearance from the Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services. This initiative aims to curb kidnapping and “one-chance” robbery cases in the capital.
Speaking at the FCT Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Programme, Wike emphasized that only cleared drivers will be allowed to operate in the FCT. He noted that most Keke Napep and motorcycle drivers serve as informants, and beneficiaries will be profiled by security agencies. The program will record vehicle numbers, driver names, and other essential details to ensure passenger safety.
Wike also distributed new cars to beneficiaries to use as taxis, encouraging them to take pride in their empowerment. He highlighted that many Nigerians who reject taxi driving jobs at home gladly accept similar opportunities abroad. The government’s support, he stated, aims to help families and reduce transportation costs, making Abuja competitive with global cities.

Key Points:
- Security Clearance Requirement: Commercial bus and taxi drivers must obtain clearance from Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Services.
- Objective: Reduce kidnapping and “one-chance” robbery cases in Abuja.
- Beneficiary Empowerment: Government provides new cars for taxi operations.
- Global Competitiveness: Abuja aims to match transportation standards of other major cities worldwide.
