The Lagos State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria has urged the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to ensure a level playing ground for all political parties participating in the July 12, 2025, local government election in the state.

In a statement issued on Monday, the state chairman of NYCN, Adigun Olalekan, emphasised the need for fairness and transparency throughout the electoral process.

We call on the electoral umpire, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, to uphold the mandate of the commission, which is to ensure free, fair, and credible elections,” Olalekan stated.

He reiterated the council’s commitment to youth participation in governance, saying, “We would like to reiterate our commitment to continuously advocate youth inclusion in governance and leadership across all sectors, even as we encourage more young people to take bold steps toward public service.”

Olalekan announced that the NYCN would be intensifying efforts to mobilise and educate young voters.

As the elections approach, the council will also be rolling out sensitisation and voter education programmes to ensure massive youth participation and to promote peaceful, free, and credible elections across the state,” he said.

The NYCN also called on political parties to support young aspirants and urged voters, particularly the youth, to back candidates who embody the ideals of service, accountability, and community development.

We urge all political parties to provide a level playing ground for young aspirants and call on eligible voters, especially fellow youths, to actively support and vote for candidates who have shown dedication to the ideals of service, accountability, and community development,” Olalekan added.

Highlighting the importance of youth engagement in politics, he noted, “Youth participation in politics and governance is crucial to achieving a more inclusive, innovative, and progressive society.

We believe that the future of governance lies in the hands of competent, visionary leaders who are ready to bring fresh ideas and energy into the system.

The 2025 LG polls present an opportunity for youths to demonstrate leadership capacity and commitment to grassroots development.”
