Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has urged the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to suspend its strike action, warning that it could endanger the lives of over 20 million Kano residents who depend on medical services. The strike was sparked by the alleged assault of a female doctor by the state’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.
Governor Yusuf expressed disappointment over the NMA’s decision, calling it a “dispute between two adults” and urging the association to allow due process to take its course. He highlighted the good relationship between doctors and the Kano State government, citing instances where planned industrial actions were shelved due to mutual respect.

Yusuf assured that a report from the investigative panel is on his desk, awaiting immediate action. He apologized on behalf of the government and appealed to the striking doctors to consider the impact on vulnerable patients, including pregnant women awaiting delivery.
The governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to accountability, ensuring that any official found culpable will face appropriate sanctions.
