fire has gutted the popular Monday Market in Maiduguri, in Borno State, destroying properties worth billions of naira.
Kukuruku News gathered from multiple sources that the fire started around 2 : 45am on Sunday and spread to different parts of the market.
The cause of the fire is still unknown but eyewitnesses account says the fire started early morning around 2am.
It was also gathered that the popular Monday market which comprises of over 10,000 shops in has be destroyed by the inferno
“The market is the destination of all goods that are brought into Maiduguri from Kano, Lagos, and even outside Nigeria.
Shop owners laments that the inferno has caused great loss on the economy, and a great loss to the people’s livelihood, especially now that the people have started recovering from the devastation of Boko Haram insurgency.
Efforts to put out the fire by the state fire service as at the time of filling this report was unable to yield results, as the fire continues to rage, destroying the largest part of the market.
Large number of angry youths were seen destroying vehicles, setting it ablaz and looting from the goods that were saved from the raging fire on the trending video cited by kukuruku News.
Also, banks that are operating in the market area were affected.
Speaking in an interview, the governor of Borno State Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum commiserate with victims, and prayed that God should give them comfort and donated the sum of 1 billion naira as an immediate relief to the market people before the state government come to their aid.
