Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the misappropriation of over N70 billion.
The EFCC chief, Osita Nwajah, made this announcement while briefing newsmen at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.
This revelation follows Governor Matawalle’s recent attempt to preempt the investigation by publicly accusing the anti-graft authority of both bias and corruption.
Governor Matawalle suggested that the EFCC should also scrutinize individuals working with President Muhammadu Buhari, including Federal Cabinet Ministers. The anti-graft office has faced criticism for allegedly being reluctant to pursue those with close ties to the President. Moreover, Governor Matawalle recently criticized President Buhari for disloyalty to the ruling APC and for contributing to the Party’s setbacks in certain States during the previous elections.
The EFCC has refuted allegations of bias and interference in its corruption prosecutions, asserting that Governor Matawalle’s claims are merely attempts to divert attention from the Agency’s work.
