Jordan has welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, calling it a crucial step towards ending the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The ceasefire, which took effect on Wednesday, is seen as a significant development in the region.
According to a statement by Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ceasefire is “an important step that must be followed by an international effort to end the aggression against the Gaza Strip and Israeli attacks in the occupied West Bank”.
Jordan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Sufyan Qudah, reaffirmed the kingdom’s support for Lebanon, stressing the need for full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. This resolution, which ended the last war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, requires only the Lebanese state’s armed forces and UN peacekeepers to be present in Lebanon’s south.

Jordan also expressed support for strengthening Lebanon’s national institutions, reconstruction, and providing economic aid to the country. The ceasefire marks the end of two months of full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah, following nearly a year of cross-border exchanges of fire.
As the second Arab state after Egypt to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, Jordan has a significant stake in regional stability. With nearly half its population of Palestinian origin, Jordan is keenly aware of the need for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
