A retired military officer, Major General Bamidele Olawumi (retd.), has faulted Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s allegation that retired military generals are behind illegal mining activities in Nigeria.

KUKURUKU Online reports that Oshiomhole said, “Those involved in illegal mining are people in high places, including retired generals. These are not unknown people. They are well-known people with private armies who protect their illegal mining sites.

The statement has since ignited widespread criticism, particularly from retired officers who feel targeted by the allegation.

However, in a statement made available to KUKURUKU Online on Tuesday, Olawumi described Oshiomhole’s remarks as “reckless, baseless, and offensive,” accusing the senator of tarnishing the reputation of retired generals who have served the nation with honour.

Olawumi said, “As a retired general who has faithfully served this country, I find Senator Oshiomhole’s comments not only false but a direct affront to my person and the legacy of my service.

His reckless generalisation has exposed retired generals like myself to unwarranted public scorn and suspicion.

He urged Oshiomhole to substantiate his claims with evidences or withdraw the allegations.

He added, If he possesses credible evidence of any retired general involved in illegal mining, the responsible action would be to report such individuals to the Department of State Services or other relevant authorities.

Resorting to baseless public accusations without proof is unpatriotic and irresponsible.

Speaking further, the retired general demanded a public apology from Oshiomhole, emphasising that his words have undermined the honour and integrity of retired officers who have devoted their lives to the service of the nation.

I demand an immediate apology to all retired generals who have been unfairly maligned by this reckless statement. If he cannot provide evidence to substantiate his claims, Senator Oshiomhole should refrain from making such damaging comments in the future,” Olawumi stated.

Olawumi also warned that such comments from someone of Oshiomhole’s reputation could undermine public trust in retired officers and distract from the nation’s efforts to address the menace of illegal mining.

Oshiomhole must understand that words carry weight, especially when spoken by someone of his standing. Loose accusations without evidence serve no purpose other than to tarnish reputations and create unnecessary tension,” Olawumi said.
