The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project has constituted a 14-member Technical Planning Committee to oversee the operationalisation of the ongoing 100-bed Ogoni Specialist Hospital project in Rivers State.
The committee, inaugurated on Wednesday, is tasked with developing a comprehensive roadmap to ensure the facility—now 76 percent complete—meets national and international standards in healthcare delivery once operational.
Speaking at the inauguration, HYPREP Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, said the formation of the committee marked a major step in ensuring the hospital is fully functional in line with global best practices upon completion.

This committee has been carefully constituted with multidisciplinary experts to provide professional guidance on the operationalization and long-term sustainability of the hospital,” Zabbey said.
They are expected to develop a detailed plan that aligns with healthcare standards, policies, and regulatory frameworks.”
Zabbey added that the committee has four months to submit its report, which will guide the hospital’s framework, specialised services, and overall direction.
He noted that the hospital will feature critical units such as Oncology, Ophthalmology, Dental, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Emergency care.
He emphasised that the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen public health infrastructure in Ogoniland, including the ongoing construction of the Buan Hospital.
The Federal Government remains committed to implementing the recommendations of the UNEP Report, particularly in improving public health outcomes,” he said.
The Chairman of the Technical Committee, Prof. Christie Mato, expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged the group’s commitment to making the hospital functional, accessible, and affordable for the Ogoni people.
The Ogoni Specialist Hospital will stand as a beacon of hope to every Ogoni person,” Mato said.
We are focused on ensuring its sustainability and that services remain within reach of the average resident.”
HYPREP assured that the committee’s recommendations would be reviewed by management before being submitted to the Governing Council for final approval.
