
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasized the need for Precision and Stability in Building Construction during the two-day Conference and 36th yearly General Meeting of the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE).
The event, Themed ‘The Emerging Task for Structural Engineering Practice in Nigeria,’ aimed to address the frequent Incidents of Building collapse in the Country.
Represented by Mrs. Bimbo Akinajo, the Managing Director of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed the Importance of Delivering Structural Engineering works with safety, precision, reliability, and Integrity.
He also outlined the State Government’s commitment to creating a conducive Environment for Inclusive Growth and Foreign Investment.
Dr. Kehinde Osifala, the Immediate past President of NIStructE, highlighted the Factors contributing to Building Collapses, including negligence, inadequate subsoil investigations, faulty foundation construction, and the use of substandard Materials.
He emphasized the significance of Employing Professionals and adhering to Quality standards to prevent such Incidents.
Osifala recommended the Partnership of NIStructE with Government Agencies for effective Supervision and monitoring of Construction projects.
He also underlined the Importance of Enforcing disciplinary actions against erring Members and continuous training through the Continuous Professional Development Programme (CPD).
In his welcome address, NIStructE President, Peter Osarodion Igbinijesu, underscored the Institution’s crucial role in advancing the Practice of Structural Engineering and Construction in Nigeria.
