The Federal Government of Nigeria, led by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani, met with stakeholders in Lagos to discuss the proposed Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill. This meeting is part of a nationwide consultation to create a comprehensive legal framework for Nigeria’s digital economy.
Tijani emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring the legislation benefits all stakeholders. He noted that Nigeria currently lacks an overarching law to support its digital economy, and this bill aims to fill that gap.
Key Objectives of the Bill:
- Improve Data Interoperability: Enhance data sharing between government agencies and private sector
- Boost Access to Government Data: Increase private sector access to government data
- Enhance Digital Services: Improve digital services for Nigerian citizens
The bill also seeks to empower government agencies to deliver better services and create opportunities for private companies.
Consultation Process:
Funded by the World Bank, the consultation process aims to gather feedback from representatives across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The National Assembly has been instrumental in the bill’s development, with key leaders like Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu and Adedeji Olajide collaborating with the Ministry .

By crafting this legislation, Nigeria aims to accelerate its digital growth, improve digital literacy, and drive EdTech investment . The digital economy sector is projected to generate N18.3 billion by 2026.
