The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria has strongly condemned the killings in Benue State, calling on the federal government to act decisively to end what it describes as “the valley of blood” that has reopened in Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement co-signed by the Acting National President, Martins Braimah, and the National Secretary-General, Dame Chisara Egwim-Chima, on Wednesday.

The Council, said its alignment with the position of Pope Leo XIV and the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, who described Nigeria as “the valley of blood in Nigeria” and Benue State as its sacrificial ground, said the Pope’s statement captured “the urgency to address the ongoing atrocities and hold the government accountable for its actions or inactions.”

They noted the spate of violence that has occured in Benue communities in recent years, urged leaders to prioritize the safety and well-being of their citizens rather than political gains or tribal loyalties

“The echoes of Pope Leo XIII’s social teachings, which emphasize the dignity of the human person and the necessity of justice and peace in societal structures, resonate deeply in the current Nigerian context. He advocated for a society built on equity and respect for human rights, encouraging active participation from the laity to foster change.

“Today, the landscape of Benue State serves as a stark reminder of the struggles faced by many Nigerian communities. Murders, kidnappings, and violent clashes have led to the loss of innocent lives and the displacement of entire families. The phrase “sacrificial ground” illustrates both the senseless loss of life and the resignation felt by many who witness these tragedies without governmental intervention.

“The CLCN… reiterates the call for peace and justice for all Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliations. It demands accountability from leaders, urging them to prioritize the safety and well-being of their citizens over political gains and tribal loyalties. The essence of governance is to protect its citizens and ensure their lives are free from violence and fear. The continual state of unrest in Benue and many other regions raisesva critical question: When shall government act?” the statement partly read.

The Council presented a five-point action plan to the government, seeking for the immediate deployment of security forces, to affected communities, the establishment of conflict-resolution mechanisms, and comprehensive aid for those affected by the violence.

“CLCN challenges the government to rise to its responsibilities and take decisive actions that include: Enhanced Security Measures: Immediate deployment of security forces to affected areas to protect residents, deter attacks, and ensure safety. Establishment of Conflict Resolution Mechanisms: Creation of dialogue platforms involving all stakeholders, including community leaders, to foster understanding and reconciliation.

“Support for Victims: Comprehensive aid for those affected by violence, including medical assistance, psychological support, and resettlement for displaced families. Legislative Action: Enactment of laws that protect the rights of farmers and local communities, alongside necessary reforms to prevent land-related conflicts. Community Engagement: Involvement of local communities in policy-making processes to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met,” they stated.

The group also issued a call to the Catholic faithful and all Nigerians to take action, stating, “The CLCN recognizes that the lay faithful have a crucial role in this struggle. Echoing the words of Pope Leo XIII, who believed in the active participation of laity in societal matters, it urges all Catholics and Nigerians to rise up, advocate for peace, and work towards a society free from violence.”

“As we plead for a swift response from our leaders, we also call upon all citizens to unite in faith and action against the pervading violence.

Let us heed the lessons of the past and foster a new era of dialogue and reconciliation for Nigeria. The time for action is now,” the statement concluded.
