Efforts are currently underway to Develop a Migration Policy aimed at Curb the Brain drain within the Healthcare Sector, according to Dr. Faruk Abubakar, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2023 Annual General Meeting/Scientific Conference of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) in Abuja, he highlighted the Urgency of this Issue.
Nigeria faces a significant Brain Drain in the Nursing Profession, a challenge that Nigeria aims to tackle through its Migration Policy.
Dr. Abubakar emphasized the need for greater Investment in training Nurses and the Provision of essential Facilities, Welfare, Insurance, and Improved Working Conditions.
He also noted that Nigeria Ranks seventh among 57 Countries experiencing a Critical shortage of Health Workers.
Addressing the Event, Mr. Ayuba Wanna, the Immediate past President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, emphasized the Importance of fair Salaries, especially in light of Fuel Subsidy removal.
He stressed that Nurses play a Crucial Role in the Healthcare Sector, and their entitlements must be Prioritized.
Dr. Olusade Adesola, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), expressed strong Support for Nurses, highlighting their Integral Role in the Administration’s Healthcare efforts.
The keynote Speaker, Mrs. Khadijat-Toyin Musah, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health Science at the University of Abuja, emphasized the need to Bridge the gap between Theoretical knowledge and Practical skills in Nursing Education.
She stressed the Importance of ensuring that Nurses possess not only Theoretical Knowledge but also the Practical Skills required to earn respect in their Profession.
Comrade Deborah Yusuf, Chairman of NANNM’s FCT Chapter, called for Increased Provision of Education and Training opportunities for Nurses.
She also advocated for Improved Welfare packages and equipping Nurses with the necessary tools to Excel in their Roles.
