Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has died at 56 after battling an illness.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed his passing in a statement, expressing heartfelt condolences to Lagbaja’s family and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Lagbaja’s Military Career
Lagbaja was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023 ¹ ². He demonstrated exceptional leadership, serving as platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and 72 Special Forces Battalion. His notable operations include:
- Operation ZAKI: Benue State
- Lafiya Dole: Borno
- Udoka: Southeast Nigeria
- Operation Forest Sanity: Kaduna and Niger States.
Education and Legacy

Lagbaja graduated from the prestigious U.S. Army War College, earning a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies. He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and two children.
Acting Chief of Army Staff Appointment

Due to Lagbaja’s illness, President Tinubu appointed Olufemi Oluyede as acting Chief of Army Staff. Oluyede was promoted to Lieutenant General on Tuesday, with President Tinubu praising his commitment and service to the Nigerian military.
