A Kuje Magistrate Court has granted bail to House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh, representing Aba North and South, in the sum of N500,000. Ikwechegh was arraigned for allegedly assaulting Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya outside his Abuja residence.
According to reports, Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to the charges, which included abuse of office, assault, and threat to life. The prosecution counsel requested a date for a full-blown hearing, while the defense counsel applied for bail, citing the defendant’s right to presumption of innocence guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

The court granted Ikwechegh bail with two sureties in the same amount, requiring them to reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide utility bills as proof of residence. The case has been adjourned to November 8 for trial.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video clip showed Ikwechegh allegedly slapping Abuwatseya and boasting that he could make him disappear without a trace. Following public backlash, Ikwechegh issued a public apology for his actions.
