Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has confirmed the deployment of troops in large numbers to ensure a peaceful Ondo State governorship election, scheduled for November 16, 2024. According to Maj-Gen. Buba Edward, Director of Defence Media Operations, the troops will support the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining security and preventing harassment or intimidation of voters.
The deployment is part of a broader effort to crush terrorist groups in the North West and other regions. Recent operations have yielded significant results, including:
Neutralization of Terrorists: 88 terrorists neutralized and 228 suspects arrested.
Rescue of Hostages: 181 kidnapped hostages rescued.
Oil Theft Prevention: 40 perpetrators arrested and stolen crude oil worth N1 billion recovered in the South-South.
Recovery of Stolen Items: 84 assorted weapons, 2,393 rounds of ammunition, and various vehicles, motorcycles, and mobile phones.
The Nigerian Air Force is also supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by flying sensitive electoral materials .With these measures in place, citizens can exercise their right to vote without fear of harassment or intimidation.
