Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the killing of three personnel of the state security outfit, Civil Protection Guards, in Gwer West Local Government Area.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, triggered violent protests in Naka, the council headquarters, leading to the burning of the local government secretariat, the palace of the Ter Nagi, and several private properties.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, on Tuesday, Alia described the attack—allegedly carried out by suspected armed herders—as a direct assault on the peace and security of Benue communities.

We deeply mourn the murder of these brave members of the Civil Protection Guards who were on duty to protect our people at On-MbaAondo, Tsambe-Mbesev ward of Gwer West. Their killing is an affront to our collective security,” the statement read.

Acknowledging the anger and frustration of the people, Alia urged residents to exercise restraint and avoid further destruction of public and private properties.

We understand the deep rage that has led to the unrest in Naka, including the unfortunate burning of the local government secretariat and the palace of Ter Nagi by protesters.

However, we must channel our anger constructively. Destroying our own assets only derails our efforts to rebuild and secure our communities,” he said.

The governor directed security agencies to intensify efforts in tracking and apprehending those responsible for the attack, stressing that the perpetrators must face the full weight of the law.

The security of our people is paramount. We will not relent until those behind this act of violence are brought to justice,” he assured.

Alia reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security in the state and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities.

In these difficult times, we must stand together against violence and work towards peace and justice.

Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a safer Benue for all,” he said
