Former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy has won his legal case against the club to recover a significant portion of his unpaid salary, withheld during his trial on rape charges, Mendy, acquitted of all charges, argued “unauthorized deductions” from his wages in an employment tribunal.
Mendy’s £500,000-a-month salary was halted by Manchester City in 2021 following his second arrest. Initially, he received full pay after his first arrest in November 2020, but the club claimed he couldn’t fulfill his contract obligations after his re-arrest.

The tribunal revealed Mendy filed a £11 million claim, covering 22 months, with the exact amount still under negotiation. Manchester City’s Chief Operating Officer, Omar Berrada, allegedly assured Mendy his wages would resume if acquitted, but Mendy received no response seeking clarification.
Mendy’s teammates, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez, financially supported him during this period. He sold his Cheshire mansion to cover legal fees, bills, and child support. Manchester City argued Mendy’s irresponsible behavior, including parties during lockdown and breached bail conditions, should be considered ¹.
Mendy’s acquittal brought relief, and his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, highlighted the case’s lasting impact on Mendy, who’s rebuilding his career with Lorient in France’s Ligue 2.
