The Bayelsa State Government has given in to pressure from the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, approving the payment of N80,000 as minimum wage for local government council staff. This move comes after the state government had already approved the same minimum wage for civil servants in November.
Acting Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo made the announcement on Tuesday during a meeting with the state minimum wage implementation committee, local government council chairmen, and representatives of various labor unions.
- Minimum Wage:The Bayelsa State Government has approved the payment of N80,000 as minimum wage for local government council staff.
- Consequential Adjustment: The government has assured that it would add the differentials arising from the ongoing discussions on the template used in paying the new minimum wage in November to the December salaries.
- Pensioners’ Remuneration:The government has promised to look into the federal government circular for the increment of pensioners’ remuneration and has already approved a N10,000 increase for pensioners across the board.

Ewhrudjakpo urged labor unions to come up with their own computation following the consequential adjustment principle and harmonize it with the state team to enable the payment of the differentials alongside the December salaries.
The state NLC chairman, Comrade Simon Barnabas, thanked the government for approving the new minimum wage but called on the government to adopt the federal government template for the consequential adjustment and approve the N32,000 increment for pensioners as contained in the recent federal circular.
