The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State, has disclosed that it has launched an investigation into the death of a woman who allegedly died due to the negligence of its staff.

The Head, Public Relations and Protocol Unit of the hospital, Usman Koli, disclosed this on Tuesday in a post via his official Facebook handle.

The PRO was responding to a Facebook post by one Ibrahim Katagum, who claimed that his mother was abandoned on a dialysis machine at the Renal Centre of the hospital.

Katagum, while narrating the incident in a Hausa written post, stated that “I found this nurse outside talking to other people, while she had tied our mother to the blood filter.

At that moment, the tube that was carrying the blood back and forth through her abdomen had come loose, and all her blood had spilt on the floor while she (the nurse) was outside talking to others,” he said.

While stating that the negligence of the nurses caused the death of his mother, Katagum stated that “Even the doctors who examined her that day were surprised that she died at that time, seeing how they found her and how they left her at that time.

We explained what happened to them.”

On that note, the hospital PRO assured that “We have already initiated a thorough internal enquiry to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.

We are committed to getting to the root of the matter and will not hesitate to take the necessary and appropriate measures to address any identified lapses and forestall future occurrences.”

Koli sympathised with the family of the deceased over the loss.

He urged the public to channel complaints or concerns through the official avenues provided by the hospital whenever an unfortunate incident occurred.

According to him, “This enables swift and structured resolution, rather than resorting to social media, which may not always offer the clarity or decorum such sensitive matters require.

Rest assured, the hospital management remains committed to upholding the highest standards of care and accountability.
