The Anambra State Government has pledged to track down those responsible for the cult-related killings that occurred in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area, on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people ¹. The incident happened during the community’s New Yam festival, known as ‘Nibo onwa asaa,’ when suspected cultists emerged from a Lexus 300 jeep and opened fire on people at an arena near Oye Nwochichi Market and Nibo Old Maternity.

Government Response

In a press statement, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, confirmed the government’s awareness of the incident and its commitment to apprehending the perpetrators. Mefor stated that the government sympathizes with the families of the deceased and assures them that it will get to the root of the incident and bring those responsible to justice.

Call to Action

The government urges members of the public to provide any useful information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators, promising confidentiality and a reward. Law-abiding residents are advised to go about their businesses without fear as the state government works with security services to handle the incident. Hotlines will be made available for reporting related information.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo has also condemned the cult-related killings, ensuring that those responsible will be brought to book ¹.
