Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Thursday reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting the National Space Research and Development Agency, describing the agency as critical to addressing Nigeria’s security and socio-economic challenges.

Akpabio, who was represented by Senator Samson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South), made the pledge at NASRDA’s 2025 Top Management Retreat held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

His remarks were contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the agency’s Director of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr. Felix Ale.

According to Akpabio, NASRDA stands at the heart of efforts to find lasting solutions to Nigeria’s complex problems, particularly in the areas of security and economic development.

He emphasised the urgent need for sustained investment in space science and technology to ensure the country remains competitive in the global knowledge economy.

Space-based technologies now drive key socio-economic systems worldwide,” he noted. “Nigeria must not be left behind. Adequate resources should be allocated to this critical sector.”

He also called for stronger collaboration between NASRDA and the legislature, stressing the importance of leveraging the agency’s technological capacity for real-time surveillance and monitoring of security threats in ungoverned regions.

In a goodwill message, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno—represented by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi—commended NASRDA for organising the retreat, describing it as timely and strategic.

He urged the agency to intensify its capacity-building initiatives to align with national development priorities.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, was represented by Dr. Robert Ngwu, hailed the retreat’s theme as “visionary.”

Nnaji added that space technology has become a crucial platform for asserting national sovereignty and economic resilience.

In his closing remarks, NASRDA Director General, Dr Matthew Adepoju, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to delivering space-based solutions through the use of indigenous expertise.

This retreat is about setting a new course, enhancing internal capacity, and strategically repositioning NASRDA for greater impact,” he said.
